The History and Growth of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Every year, hundreds of motorcyclists will head to Sturgis, South Dakota for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. This rally has grown tremendously since its inception some 70 years ago, and continues to draw crowds from all over the United States.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally actually began thanks to an ambitious motorcycle club called the Jackpine Gypsies. This group of motorcycle enthusiasts formed the club back in 1936, and became a part of the AMA (American Motorcycle Association) a year later. In the fall of 1938, the group started the now world famous motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. The first year of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally began with a simple nine racers and a quaint audience in attendance.

The Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club has become one of the biggest, longest-lasting clubs in the states, and has settled its property and grounds in South Dakota. Between exits 30 and 32 on Interstate 90 lies 40 acres of land owned and maintained by the Jackpine Gypsies. The club has grown into a non-profit organization that spends time helping others by donating to local charities, schools, and food banks, and boasts over 150 members residing throughout the world.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has grown considerably over the 70 years since it has been established. This annual event continues to draw more and more visitors to the area each year, and the event now brings thousands of people into the area for lodging, concerts, partying, among other activities.

First-timers to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally may find themselves overwhelmed with the attendance, but will quickly fit in and be welcomed by those who attend it each and every year. Many find that there is a sense of brotherhood when it comes to attending these events, and many motorcycle clubs will travel together cross-country to be a part of the action. The campgrounds are extremely large, and many will camp with tents or motor homes, or attend the events from nearby lodging. During the rally, many motorcycle retail shops are in attendance ready to sell you their motorcycle gear and the attendants are filling up the motels and local restaurants, so plan on enjoying the local scenery as well and take in all the sights that the Black Hills have to offer!

Whether it’s your first time at Sturgis or you’ve been attending the rally for years, many arrive strangers and leave as friends! Get ready for a great time and a memorable experience, no matter who you are!
